The English Language Day – American Poetry

What a better way was to celebrate English Language Day than with a native speaker. On April 24, 2018 Access Rozaje students had been honoured to have guests from the Public Affairs Office at the U.S. Embassy in Podgorica Mr. Jeff Adler, head of the department for culture and media and Ms Jelena Vojnic. Students have had a chance to meet the guests before, but during this class they got fantastic opportunity to interact and learn from them. The lesson was devoted to American poets and poetry.

At the very beginning of the lesson we had a very challenging warm up activity for all participants, as they were supposed to remember all students’ names and to repeat each student’s associations with the Access program that starts with the initial letter of their name. The next activity was also stimulating and amusing as students wrote acrostic poems starting each line with the letters of their names. Main activity was reading and analyzing poems, written by some of the most famous American poets, such as: Billy Collins, Emily Dickinson, Robert Frost, Walt Whitman and Edgar Alan Poe. Students had the great opportunity to discuss these poems with the native speaker and to practice their communication skills.
