New Perspectives and Approaches to Teaching English at the University of Montenegro

Abstract:

New perspectives and approaches to teaching English at the University of Montenegro are discussed in the lecture. Namely, the university setting here refers to the Faculty of Philology in Nikšić where students of the English Language and Literature Department are prepared for the job of English language teachers. At the beginning, the author shows the context of the methodics of teaching English within the English Language and Literature Department revealing the structure of the subject teaching there, learning outcomes where the context of teaching, i.e. lecturing the subject, is also presented.

The author puts special emphasis on the balance between theory and practice in the lecturing context explaining how this is done with students. Aiming to explain this in a more profound way, the author provides the audience with examples of new teaching approaches being used with the students and the results she has produced so far. This is additionally explained by directing the analysis of this lecture on the learning outcomes, qualities for a good teacher and good teaching styles.

Bio:

Dr Marija Mijušković graduated from the Department of English Language and Literature, Faculty of Philosophy, University of Montenegro in Nikšić. She gained her Masters with a thesis in the area of the methodics of teaching foreign languages, at the Faculty of Philosophy at Belgrade University in 2008. She successfully defended her doctoral dissertation titled Metacognitive Strategies in the Analysis and Understanding of a Text in November 2016 at the Faculty of Philosophy of the University of Montenegro in Nikšić.

She has been working at the University of Montenegro since 2004. She has participated in numerous national and international conferences in the area of the methodics of teaching foreign languages and applied linguistics. So far she has published 22 academic papers, 10 of which have appeared in international journals and one of which is in an international scientific monograph published by an internationally renowned publisher.

She is a member of the European Society for the Study of English – MONTESSE, the Modern Languages Association, the Montenegrin Society for Applied Linguistics, The Dr Biljana Milatović Montenegrin Association for American Studies, the Society for American Studies of South Europe and the European Association for American Studies.

She is the co-editor of one overseas collection of academic papers and a reviewer for many international reference journals.
